Luxury in Spain

Seville

The soul of Andalusia: the Real Alcázar and its gardens, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, flamenco in Triana, and the Hotel Alfonso XIII.

Bienvenidos

Moors, kings and flamenco

Seville was a great city of Moorish Spain, and when the Castilian kings took it in 1248 they kept its palace. The Real Alcázar, rebuilt by Pedro I in the fourteenth century in the Moorish style, is still a royal residence, its tiled halls and gardens among the most beautiful in Europe.

After 1492 the city held the monopoly of trade with the Americas, and the gold of the New World paid for its cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, whose tower, the Giralda, was once the minaret of the mosque. The cathedral, the Alcázar and the Archive of the Indies are World Heritage.

Seville is the home of flamenco, sung and danced in Triana across the river. Every spring, Holy Week brings its processions and the April Fair its horses, sherry and dancing, and the Hotel Alfonso XIII, built for the exhibition of 1929, remains the grand address of the city.

Luxury travel in Seville and the Mediterranean: your questions answered

Plan your journey to Seville

Where is Seville?

In Andalusia in southern Spain, on the Guadalquivir river. Seville airport takes private jets and is about 20 minutes from the centre; Madrid is two and a half hours by high-speed train.

What is Seville famous for?

The Real Alcázar, its cathedral and the Giralda, flamenco, Holy Week and the April Fair, orange trees in the streets, and the Hotel Alfonso XIII.

Do you tip in Seville?

Not expected as in the US. In restaurants, 5–10% for good service. Round up taxi fares. Luxury hotels: porters €2–5 a bag, housekeeping €5–10 a day.

What should you wear in Seville?

How Spain does things.

Language
Spanish (Castilian) nationwide; Catalan, Valencian, Galician and Basque are co-official in their regions. English is widely spoken in luxury hotels and fine restaurants in the main resort and city areas.
Greetings
Two cheek kisses are usual between women, and between men and women, even on first social meetings; men usually shake hands. In business and with older people, a handshake and señor / señora are the safe start.
Dress

Dining
Lunch is the main meal, rarely before 2 pm; dinner seldom starts before 9 pm, often 10 pm or later in Madrid. Book ahead for well-known restaurants. Meals are long and unhurried; the bill comes only when you ask.
Tipping
Not expected as in the US. In restaurants, 5–10% for good service. Round up taxi fares. Luxury hotels: porters €2–5 a bag, housekeeping €5–10 a day.
Good to know
Many smaller shops close for a long midday break (roughly 2–5 pm) and on Sundays; the evening paseo (stroll) around 8–9 pm is a fixture of town life.
Tourist tax
Hotels add a tourist tax per person per night: at a five-star hotel in Barcelona, €12 since spring 2026, with further rises planned; in Mallorca and Ibiza, up to €4 in summer.
