Egypt

From the Pyramids of Giza and the new Grand Egyptian Museum to a Nile cruise between the temples of Luxor and Aswan, and Alexandria on the Mediterranean: Egypt at its finest, chosen by one rule: first class or not at all.

Five thousand years on the Nile

Egypt is where the story of the Mediterranean world begins. The Great Pyramid of Giza, the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing, has risen above the desert for some 4,500 years, and the Grand Egyptian Museum beside it now shows the treasures of Tutankhamun together for the first time.

Upriver, the Nile carries travellers between the temples of Karnak and Luxor, the tombs of the Valley of the Kings and the granite islands of Aswan, where the Old Cataract has received guests since 1899. Further south, the temples of Abu Simbel were moved stone by stone to save them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser.

On the Mediterranean, Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great, looks out to sea along its Corniche, and the North Coast beyond it is Egypt's summer shore. This guide brings together only the first class: the hotel, the table, the museums and the journeys that meet our standard.

Luxury travel in Egypt and the Mediterranean: your questions answered

When is the best time to visit Egypt?

Late May to June and late September to October are ideal: hot, dry days and a sea at 23–26°C (73–79°F), without the July and August rush, when much of Cairo moves to the North Coast for the summer.

How do you arrive in Egypt by private jet?

Borg El Arab International Airport (HBE / HEBA), about 40 km southwest of central Alexandria, about 45 minutes to an hour by car.

Which are the best restaurants in Egypt?

The finest table on our list: Khufu's (Giza).

Do you tip in Egypt?

Restaurants and bars generally add a 12% service charge, and VAT of 14% may be added on top of listed prices, yet a small extra tip for the waiter is still expected. Tipping (baksheesh) is a normal part of daily life: carry small notes for drivers, guides and attendants at sites. Luxury hotels: porters the equivalent of €2–5 a bag, housekeeping €5–10 a day, in Egyptian pounds.

What should you wear in Egypt?

Western clothing is fine in hotels, restaurants and tourist venues. For mosques and churches, cover shoulders and wear skirts or trousers below the knee; women should bring a headscarf for mosques, and shoes are removed at the entrance. Modest dress in town avoids unwanted attention; keep swimwear to the beach, pool or boat. On yachts and dahabiyas, no hard-soled shoes on deck. Fine dining is smart-casual.

How Egypt does things.

Language
Arabic is the official language; the Egyptian dialect is understood across the Arab world. English, and to a lesser extent French, are widely spoken among the educated and throughout luxury hotels, Nile cruises and upscale restaurants.
Greetings
A handshake is standard, usually offered with warmth and unhurried conversation, often over tea or coffee. Close friends of the same sex may kiss on the cheek. A man should let a woman offer her hand first.

During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public in daylight; hotels and tourist restaurants continue to serve visitors. The working week runs Sunday to Thursday.
