Hoş geldiniz

Halicarnassus and the Blue Voyage

Bodrum was ancient Halicarnassus, birthplace of Herodotus, the first historian, and home of the Mausoleum, the tomb of King Mausolus that was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Its stones were later used by the Knights of St John to build the Castle of St Peter on the harbour, which now houses a museum of underwater archaeology.

In the twentieth century the writer Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı, exiled here and known as the Fisherman of Halicarnassus, gave the name Blue Voyage to the journeys by wooden gulet along the bays of the coast. Those voyages still set out from Bodrum, Göcek and Marmaris.

Today the peninsula is Türkiye’s summer stage: hotels in the bays of Göltürkbükü, Torba and Gündoğan, white villages on the hills, and Yalıkavak Marina, where many of the largest yachts of the eastern Mediterranean berth.
