Barcelona

Catalonia’s capital by the sea: Gaudí’s Sagrada Família and the modernist houses of the Passeig de Gràcia, three-star tables, and superyachts in the old port.

Benvinguts

Gaudí’s city

Barcelona was a Roman town and a medieval sea power, and its Gothic Quarter keeps the cathedral and the stone streets of that age. In the nineteenth century the city tore down its walls and laid out the Eixample, a grid of grand avenues, as its industry made it rich.

That wealth paid for modernisme, the Catalan art nouveau. Antoni Gaudí built Casa Batlló and La Pedrera on the Passeig de Gràcia and gave his last forty years to the Sagrada Família, still rising more than a century later. Seven of his works are World Heritage.

The 1992 Olympics opened the city to the sea, and today its port holds superyacht marinas and its kitchens some of the finest restaurants in Europe. Catalan is spoken alongside Spanish, and the city dines late.
